Bei noch grünen jungen Kokosnüssen befindet sich im Hohlraum etwa ein Liter süßliche, fast klare Flüssigkeit, das Kokoswasser (fälschlich auch „Kokosmilch“ genannt). Dieses ist keimfrei, solange die Nuss geschlossen bleibt und enthält fast kein Fett. In den Anbauländern ist das Kokoswasser der weniger reifen Früchte ein wichtiger Trinkwasserersatz. Das Kokoswasser wird mit zunehmender Reife weniger, aber restlos verbraucht wird es erst bei der Keimung.

An Kokoswasser reicher als grünschalige Kokosnüsse ist die gelbschalige „King Coconut“, Cocos nucifera'King', in Sri Lanka auch „Thambili“ genannt, eine besondere Sorte, die sehr wenig Kokosfleisch ausbildet, weil sie als Trinkkokosnuss künstlich selektiert wurde.

Auf Inseln ohne Quellen werden pro Person und Tag drei bis sechs Kokosnüsse zur Deckung des Flüssigkeitsbedarfs benötigt. Üblich ist die Versorgung des Flüssigkeitsbedarfs durch Kokoswasser zum Beispiel auf den Molukken und Karolinen. Es wird entweder roh getrunken oder zu Kokoswein vergoren. Aus dem vergorenen Kokoswasser wird auch ein Branntwein destilliert. An der enthaltenen Menge Kokoswasser kann abgeschätzt werden, wie lange eine Nuss gelagert wurde. Je frischer die Nuss, desto mehr Kokoswasser befindet sich darin.

Unter Notfallbedingungen ist das sterile und isotonische Kokoswasser mal intravenös als Infusionslösung zur Behandlung des Volumenmangelschocks eingesetzt worden. Bei Durchfallerkrankungen wird Kokoswasser in einigen Ländern traditionell zum Flüssigkeitsausgleich eingesetzt. Wegen des zu niedrigen Kochsalz- und Glukosegehalts stellt Kokoswasser keine Alternative zu der von der WHO empfohlenen Oralen Rehydrationslösungdar.

                               Nach dem Aufstehen sind wir schnurstracks
                               zum Müll gefahren, vor einer Schule hab ich
                               hunderte von bunten Strohhalmen gefunden.

                                Uns sind schon ein paar Unterstützer über den 

                                Weg gelaufen. Ausländische Studenten, die Müll

                                sammeln, hat hier noch keiner gesehen.

                                Aus gesundheitlichen Gründen können wir nicht alle

                                Einladungen zu Fisch, Bier oder Ca Phe annehmen.

                                TET Feier bei den Nachbarn,

                                Thai war wieder herrlich betrunken.

                                Nach unserer zweiten Sammeltour heute sind Robin

                                und ich mit dem Moped und prallen Mülltüten

                                in den kleinen Bach vorm Haus gefallen. 

                                Davon konnten wir leider kein Foto machen.

                                Robin hat jetzt Reis in seiner feuchten Kamera.

                                Für so einen hellen Teint würden die Mädchen 

                                hier sogar bei 40 Grad ne Jacke und Handschuhe

                                anziehen damit der Effekt der Bleichcreme anhält.
